RELEASE DAY POST: Masquerade on the Riviera by Evonne Wareham

Hello

A big thank you to Karen for inviting me on to the blog to introduce my latest book.

Masquerade on the Riviera is the fourth in my Riviera series – romantic suspense – with more mayhem and murders than you usually expect in a romance. The books are escapist holiday reading and as the name suggests sunshine and attractive locations play their part. In this one I did turn things around a little though, as instead of whisking us off to France or Italy it begins on the English Riviera – in the Devonshire town of Torquay. Torquay’s most famous literary inhabitant was Dame Agatha Christie and I had a lot of enjoyment from introducing some of the themes that she uses in her wonderful stories into this book – my little homage to a famous author. The action starts with a house party where a group of strangers are thrown together for the weekend – but breathe easy, as none of the guests are murdered. Not yet! There is a detective – my heroine Maisie – and a famous Egyptologist – my hero Elliott – and a necklace with a mysterious past which is reputed to have a curse on it. Maisie has joined the party because her boss has heard a rumour that someone is out to steal it.

I’m sure you can guess what happens…

The attraction between Maisie and Elliot builds up as the crimes unfold and the whole tangle ends up with a trip to Monaco, which gave me the chance to indulge my daydreams of staying in luxury villas and on billionaire’s yachts and attending a very glamorous masked ball. Being an author can be a lot of fun.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Evonne is an award winning Welsh author of romantic suspense – more crime and dead bodies than your average romance. She likes to set her book in her native Wales, or for a touch of glamorous escapism, in favourite holiday destinations in Europe. She is a Doctor of Philosophy and an historian, and a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, Crime Cymru and the Crime Writers’ Association. In 2022 her third novel in the Riviera series, A Villa in Portofino, was a nominee for the Jackie Collins Romantic Thriller Award.

ABOUT THE BOOK

From Egyptian treasures on the English Riviera to a mystery in glamorous Monaco … Renowned Egyptologist Dr Elliott Elwood is slightly puzzled when he’s invited to Torquay to take part in a bizarre bidding war for a well-known artefact collection. But, of course, he couldn’t pass up the chance to view the ‘Cleopatra Necklace’ – an infamous piece from the collection, rumoured to be cursed.

However, Elliott’s weekend away with his fellow bidders, including the strangely familiar Maisie Norris – if that is her real name – ends up involving far more than afternoon tea and historical chit-chat.

Cunning thievery and clever games abound in the days and weeks that follow, eventually culminating in a glitzy but potentially perilous masked ball on the Côte d’Azur. Will Elliott find an element of truth in the Necklace’s notorious reputation, or could his growing connection with the mysterious Maisie bring him all the luck he needs?
